The Dota 2 7.40 update introduces transformative changes that will redefine competitive play and pub matches alike. Beyond the surface-level adjustments, these modifications create new strategic dimensions that experienced players must master to maintain their edge.

Ban Phase Restructuring

Valve has reworked the ban phase sequencing to create more balanced drafting environments. The new structure provides teams with different strategic advantages throughout the draft process.

  • Changed order of the first and the third ban phases
  • First Ban Phase (First = team with the first pick, Second = team with the second pick)
  • OLD: First – Second – Second – First – Second – Second – First
  • NEW: First – First – Second – Second – First – Second – Second
  • OLD: First – Second – Second – First
  • NEW: First – Second – First – Second

Talent System Revolution

The talent system undergoes its most significant change since introduction, removing the skill point requirement entirely. This creates faster power spikes and more flexible hero progression.

  • Talents no longer require a skill point to level
  • Now talents are learned by using their own talent points available at levels 10, 15, 20, 25, 27, 28, 29, and 30
  • This results in all +2 All Attributes bonuses skilled by level 22
  • All Facets that used to have 6 All Attributes bonuses now have 7 bonuses again

Map and Objective Updates

Defensive structures receive reinforcement mechanics while new vision systems change how teams control territory and gather intelligence.

  • Tier 4 Towers now have a Barracks Reinforcement buff. Each allied barracks that has not been destroyed provides +4 armor to both Tier 4 towers
  • Bonus is for each individual building, totaling in +24 Armor for 6 Barracks
  • Added a Tormentor Timer near the minimap. Functions similarly to the Roshan Timer. Can be pinged to communicate the current state of Tormentor
  • Pinging Tormentor’s location in world will trigger the same ping as the timer (same behavior the Roshan Timer has)
  • The minimap now only has one Tormentor icon and reflects where Tormentor is or will spawn

Economy and Resource Management

Gold Distribution Changes

The assist gold formula receives a fundamental rework that changes how teams approach teamfight engagement and kill distribution.

  • Assist Gold Formula Reworked
  • OLD: 60 + ( ( VictimNetworth * 0.037 ) / NumHeroes )
  • NEW: 15 + ( ( 50 + ( VictimNetworth * 0.037 ) ) / NumHeroes )

Creep Economy Adjustments

Lane equilibrium and farming patterns undergo significant shifts with creep bounty scaling and flagbearer mechanics.

  • Melee Creep: Gold Bounty now increases by 1 per lane creep upgrade interval (every 7:30)
  • Flagbearer Creep: Gold Bounty now increases by 1 per lane creep upgrade interval
  • Flagbearer Creep: AoE Bounty Radius increased from 1200 to 1500
  • Flagbearer Creep: When killed by a player controlled unit, the Flagbearer Creep always grants Bonus Bounty to the killer’s hero regardless of the hero’s proximity to the Flagbearer Creep
  • Flagbearer Creep: Bonus Gold from killing Flagbearers is now classified as creep gold instead of ability gold
  • Flagbearer Creep: Inspiration Aura no longer affects heroes
  • Flagbearer Creep: Inspiration Aura now also provides a magic resistance bonus to affected creeps starting with 0% and improving by 4% with every lane creep upgrade interval, up to a maximum of 15 upgrades

Courier and Support Quality of Life

Courier management becomes more forgiving while maintaining strategic depth in resource delivery.

  • Courier respawn time decreased from (60s + 6s per Hero Level) to (45s + 5s per Hero Level)
  • Courier no longer has a 15% movement speed penalty while carrying a Clarity, Enchanted Mango, Faerie Fire, Healing Salve, or Tango
  • Flying Courier will now go to a more obscure shopping area within range of the Secret Shop when using Go To Secret Shop

Rune System Adjustments

Power runes receive balancing changes that affect mid-lane control and ganking potential.

  • Bounty Rune: Now grants gold based on when it was created, not when it was activated
  • Haste Rune: Duration no longer increases by 3s per rune cycle, and is always 22s now
  • Invisibility Rune: No longer grants incoming damage reduction

Item Meta Transformations

Core Item Balance Changes

The item meta undergoes substantial shifts with illusion-based items receiving significant nerfs while utility items get cost adjustments.

  • Manabreak no longer applied by illusions
  • Suppress now applies basic dispel to any target
  • Manabreak no longer applied by illusions
  • Now requires Ultimate Orb (2800) instead of Aether Lens (2275)
  • Recipe cost decreased from 1600 to 900. Total cost decreased from 5375 to 5200
  • No longer provides +300 Mana, +3 Mana Regen, or +250 Cast Range
  • All Attributes bonus increased from +8 to +24
  • Ether Blast magic damage vulnerability decreased from 40% to 30%
  • Ether Blast attributes as damage changed from (1.5x the target’s primary attribute) to (1x the sum of the caster’s attributes)

Neutral Artifact Overhaul

Neutral items receive tier adjustments and mechanical changes that create new build possibilities and strategic choices.

  • Returning as a Tier 1 Neutral Artifact
  • Passive: Boldness. Provides 20 attack speed if there are any enemy heroes within 1200 units
  • Passive: Loaded. When calculating wearer’s base damage or creep bounty from last hits, the value is computed 2 times and the highest value is taken
  • Returning as a Tier 2 Neutral Artifact
  • Passive: Reciprocity. When attacked, the hero counter-attacks a target within their attack range for 80% of their normal attack damage. Cooldown: 5s. Can’t proc attack modifiers
  • Dormant Curio increases counter-attack damage from 80% to 104%
  • Moved from Tier 5 to Tier 3
  • Relentless no longer provides status resistance for nearby enemies
  • Relentless max slow resistance decreased from 100% to 50%

  • Relentless search radius changed from 600 to the hero’s attack range

Support Item Adjustments

Warding and healing items receive quality-of-life improvements and mechanical tweaks.

  • Observer Wards cannot be planted within 300 units of another Observer Ward from the same team that has been planted within the last second
  • Plant no longer increased by cast range increases
  • Sentry Wards cannot be planted within 300 units of another Sentry Ward from the same team that has been planted within the last second
  • Plant no longer increased by cast range increases
  • Can be used directly from the backpack
  • Has no cooldown when entering the main inventory from the backpack
  • Initial and maximum stock increased from 8 to 10
  • Shared Tango now heals for half the amount per second

Advanced Strategy Guide

Hero Adaptation Strategies

The talent system changes require players to rethink their leveling priorities and power spike timing. Heroes that previously struggled with skill point allocation now gain significant flexibility.

Common Mistake: Continuing to save skill points for talent choices. With automatic talent progression, players should immediately spend available skill points on abilities.

Pro Tip: Track your talent progression milestones at levels 10, 15, 20, 25, 27, 28, 29, and 30. Plan your item timings around these power spikes for maximum impact.

Map Control Optimization

The terrain changes and watcher adjustments create new vision control opportunities. The lowered Wisdom Shrine areas and repositioned watchers require updated warding patterns.

  • Lowered the Wisdom Shrine areas to low ground, compared to the respective offlanes, filled them with water and connected to the water areas by the Tier 1 towers
  • Moved Wisdom Shrines and Watchers to the low ground and slightly closer to the Tier 1 towers. These Watchers now have vision over the shrines at night
  • Watcher night vision range decreased from 800 to 450
  • Watcher capture time decreased from 1.5s to 1s

Strategic Insight: The faster capture time makes watcher control more dynamic. Teams should prioritize capturing watchers during night cycles when vision is reduced.

Item Build Adjustments

With Diffusal Blade’s manabreak no longer working on illusions, illusion-based heroes need alternative mana burn solutions. Consider items like Orchid Malevolence or Scythe of Vyse for control instead.

Optimization Tip: Hand of Midas remains valuable for its gold generation but loses its experience acceleration. Prioritize it on heroes who benefit from attack speed and reliable gold, not necessarily experience-dependent heroes.

Economic Strategy Updates

The assist gold formula changes make solo kills more valuable relative to team kills. Consider split-pushing and pick-off strategies to maximize gold efficiency.

Advanced Tactic: Coordinate with your team to secure last hits on flagbearer creeps regardless of position, as the bounty now always goes to the controlling hero.
