Welcome, exiles! Today we’re diving deep into Woolie’s exceptional melee build for Path of Exile 3.25 Phrecia. This comprehensive guide covers both the mid-game progression at level 93 and the fully optimized endgame setup at level 100. The Dual Strike of Ambidexterity Antiquarian represents one of the most potent melee archetypes available in the current meta.
Build Philosophy
This build leverages the Antiquarian ascendancy’s unique mechanics to create an incredibly tanky character while maintaining astronomical damage numbers. The core concept revolves around scaling ward through unique interactions while maximizing critical strike potential through precise passive tree pathing and gear selection.
Why Choose This Build
If you’re seeking a melee playstyle that can comfortably handle all endgame content while providing satisfying visual and mechanical feedback, this setup delivers exceptional performance. The progression from mid-game to endgame feels natural and rewarding as you gradually acquire key items.

1. Leveling
Use Sunder with a 2h axe for the entire campaign / early maps. This provides excellent area coverage and smooth progression through the story content.
2. Sunder Setup
Added Fire Dmg (swap to Fist of War in A4)
Close Combat (swap to Brutality in A4)
Melee Phys
+Close Combat (if 5L)
+Ruthless (if 6L)
3. Path towards Resolute Technique (pick it up sometime in A3). Don’t forget Spirit of War for mana leech!
4. Ascendancy
You can literally ignore your Ascendancy until you reach maps and are ready to swap to Dual Strike. If you want to min-max, you can first choose the Ancestral Commander ascendancy and then swap over to Antiquarian later. Only do this if you know what you’re doing!
5. Keep using Sunder until you’re around level 80 and have ALL of the following items:
1) Nightgrip
2) Ynda’s Stand (be sure to defense catalyze it!)
3) Elegant Hubris (conquered by Caspiro > this is required to counteract Antiquarian’s “Lioneye’s Hair” node)
4) Rare Armor/Evasion body armor with at least 1.7k to each
5) Frostbreath (main-hand weapon)
6) Decent rare claw (offhand weapon > looking for high attack speed & crit multi > choose a base-type with +life on hit!)
7) Dual Strike of Ambidexterity
6. You’ll also likely need 15-20 Orbs of Regret (maybe more, depending on how much gold you have!) to change your passive tree over, so factor those into the cost as well.
7. Ascendancy Order:
Kalguuran Armor > Starlight Reflector > Lioneye’s Hair > Runic Tablet
Ward Scaling Explained
The build achieves its massive 16K+ ward through specific unique interactions. Nightgrip converts evasion rating to ward, while Ynda’s Stand provides substantial base evasion. The Antiquarian ascendancy further enhances this defensive layer through specialized nodes.
Critical Strike Optimization
Your crit chance scales through both passive tree investments and gear affixes. The transition from 60% to 73% crit chance represents significant power spikes from optimized gear rolls.
Common Pitfalls to Avoid
Many players transition too early before acquiring all required items. This results in significant power loss and frustration. Ensure you have the complete checklist before respeccing.
Gear Progression Timeline
Expect to farm maps for approximately 15-20 hours to acquire all necessary gear pieces. The Elegant Hubris with Caspiro is particularly crucial for counteracting the Lioneye’s Hair downside.
Mapping vs Bossing Strategy
For mapping content, prioritize movement speed and area coverage. Against bosses, focus on positioning to maximize your damage windows while maintaining defensive uptime through proper skill rotation.
Action Checklist
- Level with Sunder using 2h axe through campaign
- Acquire all 7 required items before transitioning at level 80
- Respec passive tree using 15-20 Orbs of Regret
- Complete Antiquarian ascendancy in proper order
- Optimize gem links and gear affixes for endgame content
